Available in both nonperforated and perforated variants, release films are widely used in a number of composite manufacturing processes, the key function being to create a non-bonded layer that easily releases the layers above, whilst allowing a controlled resin flow into the laminate.

If choosing a perforated film, the pattern and materials you choose will depend on the process you are using and the density of the laminate, as this will dictate your desired resin flow rate. A perforated film will allow the escape of volatile gases from the workpiece but will also allow for the removal of any excess resin during both pre-preg and resin infusion processes.

Generally, release films are a thermoplastic film that has been blown or cast to between 10 and 75 microns in thickness and are usually coloured but translucent at those thicknesses.

As with bagging films, release films can be produced with varying levels of toughness and flexibility.
