Taps and dies explained

Taps are a tool used to cut threads on the inside of a hole and dies are a tool used to cut threads on the outside of a rod. Taps are made up of a handle, a tap body, a tap shank, and a tap tip, whereas dies are made up of a die handle, a die body, a die nut, and a die thread.

UK sizing of threading taps and dies

UK tap and die sets are typically composed of a set of taps and dies in metric sizes, ranging from M2 to M20. Sets are also available for Whitworth, British Standard (BS), and British Association (BA) threads.

Individual die sizes

Our convention on DTC is metric, so buy our metric socket head cap screw dies here including:

• M3 – d3mm, pitch 0.5mm
• M4 – d4mm, pitch 0.7mm
• M5 – d5mm, pitch 0.8mm
• M6 – d6mm, pitch 1.0mm
• M8 – d8mm, pitch 1.25mm
• M10 – diameter 10mm, pitch 1.5m
• M12 – d12mm, pitch 1.75mm
• M14 – d14mm, pitch 2.0mm
• M16 – d16mm, pitch 2.0mm
• M18 – d18mm, pitch 2.5mm and
• M20 – d20mm, pitch 2.5mm

Tap and die threading sets

Choose from the following sets:

• Metric tap and die set – this set of precision-machined Tungsten steel taps and dies comes with adjustable core diameters and metric coarse and fine sizes. Along with two tap wrenches, a steel die holder with knurled screws, and a heavy-duty carry case, it is the perfect tool for any job!
• 40 pieces tap and die set – a 40 pieces set of alloy steel taps and dies features split dies with machined lead-ins for easy use and a die holder with a self-centring mechanism for straight and accurate thread cutting. It also includes a T-handled tap wrench and Metric screw pitch gauge
